07 JanNew Term at Lowewood

Hurrah for Lowewood!Back to work this week, but luckily, I’m not feeling bad about it, because I have the forthcoming Lowewood Academy day to look forward to. Yes, it’s back to school for the January Term!

My friend Beth Somerton and I were plotting via text the other day, as both of us had been given interesting new toys from our other back-row friend Bex and had each had a few other things with which to cause mischief.

Beth was musing on the generally stupidity of Mr Shaftebotham in organising a day so soon after Christmas, when it was likely that quite a few girls had got naughty things in their stockings.*

I gently pointed out that was probably why he did it as it gave them an excuse to deal with us!

Anyway, this term, Lowewood is going ‘Back to Basics’ and we are having a Victorian Day. We aren’t wearing Victorian garb, but the staff have been told that they must teach proper subjects, not namby-pamby modern rubbish such as media studies. This has led to a profusion of Mental Arithmetic, Logic and Physics being on the timetable, much to my horror.

When it comes to anything involving mathematics, codes or logic, I am invariably at sea. It’s strange, because I’m reasonably clever, but for some reason, I cannot add two and two. It sometimes leads to difficulties in play, because the dom normally assumes that I am playing up on purpose and punishes me, whilst really, my eyes are pricking with tears because I feel like a complete remedial idiot** and to add insult to injury, I’m then being whacked for being a thicko.

Given that I have a sense of justice when playing and don’t like to be whacked just for the hell of it in a school scene – I like to have been caught out – this can lead to me sulking. Luckily, Beth is always on hand to jolly me out of it. But it doesn’t stop me dreading the maths-based lessons. Perhaps if I just sit quietly at the back, the teacher won’t notice me?

*Things to be naughty with in class that is, not naughty rude things, even though I got quite a few of those as well!
**Even more remedial than Abigail!

It’s ok Jess if needs be you can copy
my maths (well I have to be of some use!). Hurrah for the new term :-)

  2. Paul says:

Jessica, don’t worry, I’m sure that you will cope.
Just be sure to take copious notes for a full write up here. ;)
    Warm hugs,
    Paul.

  3. Scarlett says:

Who am I going to copy off if I’m sitting next to Abigail? I’m so fucked…

Emma Jane can vouch for me that the last time someone tried to make me do math in a school role-play I fled the room in floods of real tears! Ack! You have my deepest sympathy.

Is it so very wrong that I’m looking forward to the maths and logic lessons the most?

    Ha ha ha ha

Update from School – due to Mr Edmond’s indisposition, mental arithmatic is off the menu – ahahahahahahahahahahah!

    No dunce’s cap for me!

    Logic still on though. Booo!

  7. Eliane says:

Am sobbing here in my snowy erie. No buses running anywhere near my and no chance of a thaw… am fearing that Jemima will not make it back to Lowewood for the beginning of term. Which is disastarous, as she wanted to prove to Mr Brown that she is NOT a geek, thank you very much.

    Awww :(

Poor darling. If it’s any consolation, I fell flat on my face at 7.15am this morning whilst clearing snow of the car – I slid on ice and then bounced of the garage door and the car bumper on the way down. Hold that amusing vision….

  9. Martha says:

Aww, Jess :-( Hope you don’t end up with a sick note for school! Especially now all the staff with the most evil subjects seem to be jinxed from inflicting them upon us ;-)

  10. Rebecca says:

I’m really sad there won’t be logic or maths or anything – I was looking forward to those lessons! Am glad Jess appears to be in one place and very angry at the snow gods for being responsible for Eliane’s absence – boooo!

  11. Abel says:

Not fair. Hate snow. So wanted to be there. Can you schedule the next Lowewood day somewhere guaranteed to be warm? A school trip to the Caribbean, maybe?

  12. Destructicon says:

What exactly is Lonewood all about? Would you care to give a run down for your readers that are new-ish? :P

    pretty please?

  13. Jessica says:

    Sure thing Destruction

For the geeks, Lowewood Academy exists in two places. In real life, it is a private, invitation-only academy for adult schoolgirls and their teachers and meets for day schools or boarding schools several times a year. You can see that at http://www.fawcetthall.co.uk/page6. It was also a blog – http://www.lowewood-academy.co.uk, which for three years was a widely-followed ‘story’ blog, a soap set in a modern day boarding school which still had corporal punishment. This finished in July 09, was the first of its kind and spawned many imitators ;)

I’ll write up the exploits we got up to fat our latest real-life day for next week!
Ok, enough bragging from Jessica now!
