Vampires...I have a guilty secret. So I’m going to share it with everyone who reads this and if they scorn me – I don’t care.

I like trashy fiction.

Preferably with lots of sex.

Now, before my literate readers start deserting this page in droves, can I just say, I read a lot of serious history books, ok? So when I sit down on the tube for the commute or have half an hour to eat my lunch in – I go for the comfort of a nice trashy fiction novel, easily digestible. And besides, I actually really like racy fiction. All the Salman Rushdie snobs amongst you will laugh with scorn, but good racy fiction is really hard to write. You get loads of bad stuff of course. But the good stuff, now that moves me far more than anything Salman Rushdie has ever written. Or half the people on the Booker Prize shortlist.

Anyway, I’m diverting from the point of this post. Which is meant to have some kink in it somewhere. So here goes….

I am a huge fan of what I call Vampire porn. That’s people like Charlaine Harris and the Sookie Stackhouse books, Laurel K. Hamilton and her Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series and of course, Stephanie Meyer. There are others. But give me a nice bloodsucker with a bit of lycanthropy (i.e shape-shifting, werewolves etc) and lots of sex thrown in for good measure and you have a happy Jessica. Vampires do it for me. They are hot!

Anyway, engrossed in the latest (book 14 – The Harlequin) Anita Blake book, I was intrigued by the concept of an Ulfric and a Lupa. Stay with me on this train of thought! Anita is shagging the local King of the Werewolves and they call him Ulfric. As his main partner, she is known as his Lupa. Part of her job is to look after the younger shape-shifters, like a kind of supernatural big sister and see that no harm comes to them. If someone disses her pack, she hurts them big-style. It often involves death.

It made me think about me and He Who Must Be Obeyed.* We have a large group of friends, but some of our playmates are very special to both of us and have a relationship that goes beyond ‘mere’ play and into the realms of strong friendship and binding ties of emotion. With these people, I feel like I want to protect them from the big bad world, provide advice and help, and be there when they need me.  In the book I’m reading at the moment, Anita realises that when she is someone’s lover in the sexual sense, they are entitled to extra-special protection, that the mere fact of being lovers increases the emotional tie. I think this is certainly true of BDSM – whilst I really like my playmates that I’m not doing rudery with, the addition of rudery makes them somehow more special. That’s when I enjoy spending time with them so much, that I want to gather them round me as much as possible and feel almost – well – whole with them. This is when you know someone so well that the slightest nuance can affect how you play. So you want them with you, to play together and separately and as part of the group. But they have a special something. And when they hurt, you hurt. You bleed with them as well. So the ‘Lupa’ analogy resonated with me because I felt it described very well my relationship with a few very special people. It felt good.

Anyway, before it all gets too metaphysical, the best bit was that Anita has a really big bed and sleeps in a big furry heap with her (male) lovers, like puppies. I really must get a bigger bed. And a bigger house!

    Jessica, whatever floats your boat.
I enjoy a book that will allow me to escape from the real world for a few minutes. :)
When I was young, in the dark ages, ;) I had such a group of friends, that is a very special feeling.
    Warm hugs,
    Paul.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying trash, I like Jane Austen, I also like Unsticky, which is about beautiful young women falling for rich older hot men and being bought a lot of shoes. Books are for escapism, so for me it’s sex and shopping, for you its vampires. As for the Jessica-Protection Raquet (Is that the wrong kind of racket?!) you’re a kick ass vampire style fairy godmother. xxx

    1) Yay for your use of the word rudery.

    2) Next time you see Kitten, mention the whole vampire fiction thing to her. You will have much to discuss! (did I ever tell you what happened the, er, first time we tried to watch Twilight???)

    3) I admire your protection-y streak. I don’t have that – but I think it’s something you and HWMBO do very well with those you gather that closely around you. :-)
